rir and leghorn cross?

Postby chicken on Sun Jun 14, 2009 11:57 am

does anyone know what a rir and a white leghorn cross would look like or mainly how well would they produce eggs since both are very good producers? :D

I imagine production would be pretty much similar to what either would already give you.
I don't know anything about genetics so I can't help you with what they'd look like.
We have a few members that know a lot about genetics but I hardly ever see them here lately.

You mean Leghorn and RIR standard chickens, right? (you know, large fowl)

The color would probably be a pretty mix of the RIR's red, and some white from the Leghorns. I think that the color wouldn't have a pattern, there would just be patches of red and white here are there.

The chicken would be a mottled bronze-red and white, with some chicks pulling more one way than the other. The lay rate will likely be significantly higher than the typical lay rate of a Rhode Island Red chicken due to the influx of the Leghorn genes. However, this is not a blanket statement as individual chickens (and specific strains of the RIR or Leghorn chickens) will produce more than others. :)

Has anyone ever actually crossed these birds and hatched chicks from them? :D

When do you think you will have the full-grown adults?

I think this is a sexlink sometimes called an isa brown or sal-sexlink. The roosters would be white and the hens would be red with splashes of white on the underbelly.
